What is an Affinity Game?
An Affinity Game is one that connects to the concept of the “affinity group,” which the Oxford dictionary defines as, “A group of people linked by a common interest or purpose.” They are games that connect and empower players with a common interest and purpose to play cooperatively and work together towards common goals. Ideally these goals, interests and purposes extend into the material world.
Affinity Games is a game design collective started by Hermione Banger (@hermionebanger) and Casey O’Donnell (@caseyodonnell) in 2018 and has since grown.
Mission
Our mission is to expand what it means to play and belong together.
Goals
- Speak to academics, game developers, media, players and activists about the foundations and possibilities that Affinity Games offer players and broader society.
- Produce books, games, journal articles, interviews, blog posts, and social media about Affinity Games.
- Hack/convert existing games to be Affinity Games.
- Offer as much of our work as freely as possible.
